The wit, eloquence, and historical finesse of the incomparable Georgette Heyer. There's no one quite like her for writing comedies of manners. Despite the delicious froth of some of her narratives, an underlying realism and writerly genius makes these books endure.

I loved this book, it was my first Heyer, and my first in the genre. I named my son, many years later, Justin for the Duke of Avon.
Together, my daughter and I own every GH ever written, some of them in multiple copies. They are one of our go-to rereads in times of trouble - much used at the moment. (I have to admit that St Mary's is also one of my go-to refuges. Sadly I haven't yet managed to persuade my daughter she would love them too...but I envy her when she finally discovers them.)
These Old Shades is one of my favourites though my absolute top of the list is The Reluctant Widow. I think it must have been one of the first I read. Probably best to avoid the film though.....
