Winner of the Valentine's Day Poetry Competition

Drum roll please...

Many thanks to everyone who contributed a poem and to those who voted. This was a fun competition and there were some excellent entries. I’m delighted to announce that the winner is Suzanne Owen-Westwood. She will receive a framed copy of her poem - Seventh Time’s the Charm about Henry the Eighth. When asked why did you choose this historical person for your poem? Suzanne said “He’s so famous for his love life - I couldn’t resist!”

Seventh Time’s the Charm

So you’re on the hunt to find a new wife,
A woman to count on during trouble and strife.
Feel free to stop looking, it’s time to rejoice
For I will explain why I’m your perfect choice.

All of my portraits are painted just so,
A perfect likeness of my person, you know.
It’s plain to see I outshine the old six
And I swear I know nothing about politics.

I’ve shied away from the Catholic scene
I am ready to be your Protestant queen.
Supreme Head of the Church of England is quite a mouthful,
But if it’s heirs you want then we’ll have a house full.

I’m committed to giving you the boys you require
(Provided, of course, I don’t prematurely expire!)
There’s more than one way that a man can be wealthy,
And let’s face it, Prince Edward isn’t looking too healthy.

I’m not one for vanity, I don’t mean to boast,
But I really do cook quite an excellent roast.
You won’t go hungry as long as you stick with me,
We’ll have leg of lamb for breakfast, dinner, and tea.

Now, I’ve heard that your leg is a little bit poorly,
It doesn’t bother me one bit, because surely
You’ll come to see that I’ve got quite the gift
Of mastering the controls of a Stannah Stairlift.

I’ve spent some time researching your dating history
Why all these women left you is a mystery.
I know I can rouse you from this manic depression,
Just say that you’ll let me be your number seven?
