My daughter is torn about seeing The Odyssey. She is a great fan of Greek Mythology (esp Stephen Fry's take on the subject) and has been looking forward to the film but from the clips she's seen and that certain characters and plot points have been altered or ditched totally she is not sure. Still has nightmares about Brad Pitt in Troy (more wooden than the horse). I did say to her well you can always watch Jason and the Argonauts instead (I still remember watching it at the cinema when I was still in junior school, yes that does age me!). I'll get her to read Jodi's positive review and encourage her to give it a go.
Jodi, did you know that Matt Damon's stunt double is a woman. It seems she is the only one who can match his arm muscles! (There could be 6 ! but that was made fun of by the great man!)
So which of your characters would you like Matt Damon to play.
I assume that Calvin Cutter didn't direct this one before his death last year.
I must have read 'First Christmas' half a dozen times, leaking tears throughout most of the story, especially the various stories endings (and she died! Mummy's AWESOME)
What’s been a bit amusing here in the US the past week is the proshot of Hadestown was often playing its limited run in theaters that were also hosting IMAX editions of The Odyssey. As one one friend said, there was a twisted amusement to listen to Andre de Shuelds as Hermes sing “It’s sad song, it’s a sad tale, it’s a tragedy” — and hear the sounds of Odysseus slaughtering the suitors bleed in from two screens over.
I’m torn about seeing The Odyssey in the theaters solely because of the length. I fear as I get older and my body crankier, a film that long is not necessarily enjoyable in the theater without an intermission, so I will likely wait until it streams. (Age and body crankiness is why I have a sizeable television and a sound system that was tine on both Lawrence of Arabia and Lord of the Rings.)
