Took a while but finally the penny dropped. I think the cup'a rosie lee with no milk did it. Maybe Ben needed to 'spend a penny'?

Very cleverly plotted. I enjoyed the developing mystery of the beep, and a nicely satisfying conclusion that became cunningly revealed - and all very much in canon character.
