In this remarkably prescient modern classic, Neal Stephenson explores
linguistics, computer science, politics and philosophy in the form of a break-neck adventure into the fast-approaching yet eerily recognizable future.

Neal Stephenson is one of my favourite authors (obvs inc Jodi). Although Snow Crash is visceral in a William Gibson sort of way - bombarding you with ideas - his other books are perhaps more engaging for St Mary's fans, especially The Baroque Trilogy. This focuses on the period in the 17/18th century when finance, politics, philosophy and science all developed rapidly and inter-connectedly, and features a host of historical characters as well as some delightfully droll protagonists. Funny, thought-provoking, and highly re-readable (alongside its companion earlier novel Crytonomicon). Though my favourite of Stephenson's is Anathem, a slow burn of a novel that starts in an other-worldly monastery and builds up to what I will politely call a mind-coitus.
