We waited a long time for this sequel but it’s been well worth it. In fact, I finished it, immediately picked up Shades of Grey, enjoyed that even more than I remembered, and then embarked on a second reading of Red Side Story so I’m in a kind of Jasper Fforde stupor at the moment.

The story branches off in all sorts of unexpected directions but there’s still his trademark brilliant storytelling, silliness, tragedy, hilarity, shock, drama and suspense. Some questions are answered – new ones are raised – and I’m desperate to find out what the future holds for Eddie and the splendidly intransigent Jane.

I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoiling it for those who haven’t read it yet – big treat to come if you haven’t – but rest assured, it’s easily up to Jasper’s already stratospheric standards. Sit back with a mug of warm puddle water and enjoy …
