24. Entry from Hannah King
A Valentine’s poetry competition for lovers of history
A Valentine sonnet to unsung mothers
A Valentine reaching back across time
But how to choose one from all history?
One worthy recipient of my rhyme?
So many people - quite a mystery!
Send sweet nothings to the brokers of wars?
Those men who bullied and governed by might
Soldiers sacrificed for somebody’s cause
Despots and rulers convinced they were right?
Or
Mothers who saw their safe spaces crumble
Who saw the gathering storm clouds of war
With terror heard the volcano rumble
Hugging their children and blocking the door
They’re who I’d speak to if I only could
Send my love and ask them - can it come good?
