6. Entry from Deborah Levinson
A Valentine’s poetry competition for lovers of history
Sappho
You sat upon your island school,
While women basked under your rule.
Your words were music to all ears,
Still known well, these many years.
My heart sings your songs so filled with grace,
I’d love to look upon your face.
I’d tell you just how much I feel,
The way you shared your world, so real.
I’d be so grateful that you live,
Your words, your songs, so much to give.
We still remember, so long from then,
Encouraging us to pick up pen.
The love of women named for you,
Fills us with hope when we are blue.
If there is only one to know,
It has to be the great Sappho.
We were delighted to receive so many entries to this competition. We asked for a Valentine’s Day Poem with rhyming couplets written for any figure from history.

The winner will be announced on St Valentine’s Day and will received a framed copy of their poem.
