22. Entry from Carol Matz
A Valentine’s poetry competition for lovers of history
Dearest Nicolaus
Oh, my dearest Nicolaus,
Whatever shall become of us?
Your deeds are great and mine are small.
I make the meals and sweep the hall.
Of all the great things you have done,
You’ll best be known for just this one.
You studied planets and the sun,
And how they moved since time begun.
You figured out that all along,
What others thought, was really wrong.
The sun stands still, the planets move.
But it was very hard to prove.
You only have your eyes to see,
And what you learned from history.
No magic eye to bring things near,
You used the math to make it clear.
And others who come after you,
Will find that what you say is true.
Your name will stand the test of time,
And your ideas will truly shine.
But in this time, you have my heart,
And wishes that we never part.
No wedding knot I’ll ever gain,
Still, faithful Anna I remain.
