28. Entry from Andrea Anderson
A Valentine’s poetry competition for lovers of history
A note to dear Charles Dickens,
I love the way you write.
I wait impatiently to read,
your next instalment each fortnight.
Your characters I recognise,
I see them in the street.
The poor and crippled urchins,
The policeman on the beat.
The pickpockets, the upper class,
The imbalance is so huge.
Those working hard to feed their kin, employed by such as Scrooge.
You raise the issues of the day,
and give us folks a voice
Your clever prose portrays all those
Who really have no choice.
Your stories show reality,
Your words create our everyday.
The injustice of the workhouse,
the courts and of all we must obey.
Thank you for your stories,
Where your characters show our plight.
I really hope that for some time yet,
you will persevere and write.
