27. Entry from Gil Bomber
A Valentine’s poetry competition for lovers of history
An abundance of Henrys have ruled in the land -
Your name is propitious, they mostly were grand.
Some exceptions it’s true, whose reign we could rue…
But generally speaking, bad Henrys were few.
(The eighth one of course, was way beyond mean.
Whatever you do, don’t agree to be queen….
A regular card, he led with a trump
On the day that he called Anne of Cleeves piggy frump.)
But for me you’re the one that deserves all my praise.
You could read and could write and could turn a good phrase
In English and French, which you learned for your queen -
As the Avon-based Bard revealed in a scene.
From early in youth, when you went off to war,
In Wales and in France you won battles galore.
In leading your men, you leapt into each breach
And if you had time, delivered a speech.
And now we’ve arrived at the ultimate verse….
Be you Harry or Hal, I’d give much to converse.
If history tells true, and the tales are no my(f)th
You’re my Valentine hero, Henry the Fifth!
